CAWS,

the Association of IB World Schools, represents IB Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma and IBCC Programmes in public and private schools throughout California and Nevada.

Over the past twenty-four years CAWS has served as an information conduit for California IB schools and their communities and as a liaison to the International Baccalaureate Organization. To support the continued growth of the IB in California, the association has secured recognition and college credit for the IB Diploma from the University of California. It continues to legislate with the state to provide funding for teacher training for teachers in all four of the IB Programmes. Each summer CAWS provides authorized IB teacher training workshops for Diploma/MYP/PYP teachers. Authorized IB schools pay dues which in turn help fund scholarships totaling $20,000 which are given yearly to students, teachers and schools representing all four IB Programmes.

SYNOPSIS FOR WEBSITE - GRANLIBAKKEN 2015


Category 1 workshops focus of IB philosophy and implementation. They provide professional development and assistance for schools that have decided to apply for IB authorization. They are also relevant for educators who are new to an IB school with an existing IB programme and those interested in joining an IB school. Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • the basic philosophy and curricular model of the programme
  • programme standards and practices appropriate to the participants’ role
  • the appropriate programme framework (PYP,MYP,DP)

Category 1 workshops will only spend 1-2 sessions on the course designs/outlines.

Category 2 workshops focus on programme delivery. They emphasize assessment, teaching and learning methodologies, and exploring best practices in the classroom. The goals of these workshops are to enhance the understanding of the IB philosophy and programme model and improve the quality of programme delivery. Participants will:

  • Make connections between the progranmme framework and practice
  • Enhance their understanding of the role of assessment in the IB programmes
  • Discuss and analyze standards and practices appropriate to their role
  • Engage in discussion and activities aimed at sharing pedagogical techniques Such as best practices in the classroom; teaching and learning methodologies; and finding, sharing, developing and using resources

Category 2 workshops assume participants have been teaching their particular IB programme

Category 3 workshops shift from implementation and programme delivery to impact and influence. The overall purpose of workshops in this category is to provide a forum for experienced educators to build on and enhance their professional development portfolios. Participants will engage in detailed discussions around topics such as learning theory, pedagogy, assessment, subject-specific content, administrative and pedagogical leadership.

Category 3 workshops assume that the educator has several years of experience in an IB School and wants to delve more deeply into an area of interest.
