October 2008 Newsletter

Coordinators and Administrators
The 2008-2009 school year began with a complete makeover of the former California International Baccalaureate Organization, now known as The California Association of IB World Schools. With a new name and acronym, CAWS, plus a redesigned website with online registration capabilities, we almost have assumed a new identity. That is not totally the case however in that we have kept the old sign-in to the website and the beautiful orange poppy logo which appears on all of our documents. This will be a busy year and to keep you abreast of the happenings in the Association, I plan to post a newsletter regularly on the website. So please check the site often for all the latest in our conferences, roundtables, teacher training, job postings, and even online professional development.
We are preparing for the fall conference next weekend on the evening of October 19th and the day of the 20th at the Horton Grand Hotel in San Diego centering around "Access and Equity" with Salomon Zavala as our keynote speaker. There are still openings for registration. Go to the website and on the Information Page under upcoming events click on Fall Conference to register.
Our first roundtable this year is in Santa Rosa on November 15th hosted by Dot Battenfeld from Montgomery High School. Check out the agenda posted on the website along with this newsletter. Dot is offering subjects in both DP and MYP, so send your teachers to share their best practices with others and enjoy a great day of enrichment.

Another great addition to the two roundtables already listed on the CAWS calendar on the website is the possible addition of a PYP offering in January or February of 2009 and maybe one in the spring of ’09 as well. I’ll get further details to you as soon as I have them.
The latest piece of good news for us is the possible addition of a second teacher training workshop for MYP and PYP teachers in Granlibakken, Lake Tahoe in the fall of 2009. We have been on a waiting list for an additional TT Workshop for some time with NY. Now that there are some available openings, I have submitted a proposal to NY and hopefully we will be successful in our efforts to provide more authorized training to IB teachers.

As always our DP summer workshops will take place in 2009 in Granlibakken. All of the information is posted now on the website including the flyer for you to download. Registration starts November 3, 2008.
Again we are offering on our website the opportunity for teachers to participate in online courses for educators offered by the American Museum of Natural History in NY. The course is entitled Seminars on Science and is recognized by the IB. Check our website for details and how to register.
The Council of International Schools College Fair at the French International School in San Francisco on September 21 was a great success, so much so that they may return to the same venue next year. Many schools in California and all over the country attended and enjoyed time with college and university representatives.
Mark your calendars! There has been a change of date for this much anticipated workshop for Theatre Arts teachers sponsored by the International Schools Theatre Association partnering with Mo`o lelo Performing Arts Company in San Diego. The dates are now October 15-17 of 2009. The dates on the calendar on the website have already been changed.
We want to reestablish this feature from the old website. If you have job postings that you want our webmaster to list, let me know.
Our webmaster collapsed our old website. Everything that was current was transferred to the new site and we updated everything else. So, out with the old and in with the new! It’s an exciting time for us to grow, change, and make a difference.

Best regards,
Pat Prather – Executive Director
