August 2009 Newsletter by Diana Cinatl

Dear Heads of Schools and IB Coordinators:

Welcome Back! Though we are still in the midst of some tough economic times, I remind myself of how lucky I am. I have a wonderful family that I cherish, my health and the opportunity to work with colleagues, not only at my school, but throughout our state and the Americas, who are committed to IB Programmes that will prepare our students for the future. Together, despite all the financial obstacles, we are making a difference. Thank you for all that you do for the students in our schools!

I am looking forward to another exciting year of CAWS activities and events. I hope all of you will continue to support CAWS by attending our Fall Forum and our Spring Seminar. We are thrilled that Drew Deutsch, Director of IB Americas, will be our guest speaker at our Fall Forum on Nov. 2nd. After his presentation, he will join the PYP, MYP and Diploma breakout sessions. It will be a great opportunity for California IB Schools to have a conversation with Drew so that he gets the California perspective about all things IB. Please note that we will be holding our Business Meeting after lunch. We will be voting on our new updated CAWS By-Laws and new board members. We hope you stay and cast your vote. In February at our Spring Seminar, Jerry Chris will bring the IB Learner Profile to life. Please see our flyer and website for more information.

Last spring we presented our first CAWS Scholarships to California students and teachers. Thank you to our CAWS Scholarship Committee which was chaired by Marlyn Bussey. They did an outstanding job of selecting the recipients. It is very gratifying to recognize students and teachers at your schools who embody IB. We will offer these scholarships once again. This year the committee will be chaired by Anne Evans. Please remember to pay your CAWS dues for eligibility. Please visit our website for more details and deadlines.

One of main services that CAWS provides California IB Schools is the opportunity to send their teachers to IB authorized training in California. We are very proud to now offer, in addition to our Diploma training, PYP and MYP training. Our Teacher Training Workshops are held at Granlibakken Resort under the direction of Pat Prather and Jerry Chris. They provide a quality experience for not only the participants, but also the trainers. Well done Pat and Jerry! Please see our website for dates and subjects.

The CAWS Board has adopted an objective of sponsoring legislation in 2011 to request funding for all IB programs, including the Middle Years and Primary Years programs. Our Lobbyist from Schools Innovations & Advocacy, Peter Birdsall, has recommended a few activities for next year that will put CAWS in a position to realistically request full and ongoing state funding through a bill in the 2011-12 legislative cycle.

  • We need all IB schools to cultivate relationships with local legislators and provide information (CAWS, along with SIA, are developing a standard presentation) on the IB Programs. During next year's election season, invite them to attend an IB Parent meeting. They will remember those personal connections with voters more than any letter that they receive. (Please let me know what connections you make.)
  • Peter will coordinate sending CAWS leaders to Sacramento to meet with state policy-makers to make sure that they are aware of IB and to stay active in the school finance/categorical discussions. We want to make sure that old and new legislators know and support IB.
  • CAWS will actively contact the candidates for Superintendent of Public Instruction so that support for IB becomes part of the "platform" for the successful Superintendent candidate. Let's make sure that they understand and support IB Programmes.
  • CAWS needs to create tools (PowerPoints & brochures) and make them available on our website for schools and coordinators to use.

I invite you to periodically check our CAWS website to learn about the latest information about CAWS Conferences, our IB Training Workshops for Diploma, MYP and PYP teachers at Granlibakken, legislative updates, job postings, scholarships, etc. Also, for those of you who were unable to attend the IB Americas Conference this summer in Quebec, you can download conference materials and PowerPoints at the conference website.

Lastly, please feel free to contact me, or any of our CAWS Board Members (Steve Rockenbach – Past President, Bill Redding – Treasurer, Kathleen Sigafoos – Secretary, Anne Evans – PYP Representative, Jennifer Sims – MYP Representative and Ed Marquez – Legislative Representative). We are here to serve.
